Mathew Knowles Feels JAY-Z Didn’t Influence Beyoncé’s AOTY Win
Mathew Knowles is “very proud” of Beyoncé, but he feels her winning Album of the Year wasn’t influenced by JAY-Z’s speech at last year’s Grammys.
According to TMZ, the former music executive said those criticizing her long-awaited win and “chalking it up” to Hov’s sentiments don’t understand how the voting process works. As emphasized at the 2025 Grammys, the Recording Academy has over 13,000 voting members who reportedly listen to each contender in its entirety and debate over who should win. Thus, Knowles believes Cowboy Carter being named Album of the Year was rightfully earned.
The 73-year-old later took to X to share his thoughts on Bey’s iconic night. “History was made on multiple levels. I love you and I am very proud of you, Beyoncé. You’ve opened the door for many in the future who might not ever have gotten a chance. Dad,” he tweeted.

The speech Knowles referenced was when JAY-Z called out the Recording Academy while accepting the 2024 Global impact Award.
“We want y’all to get it right. At least getting close to right and obviously it’s subjective,” said the Blueprint rapper. “You know, some things — I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that.”
Despite not name-dropping Beyoncé, he was subtly referred to the four times she was snubbed for Album of the Year— losing to Taylor Swift, Beck, Adele, and Harry Styles.
In addition to Album of the Year, Bey also won for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and made history as the first Black woman to win for Best Country Album. That recognition seemed to shock her the most and her reaction instantly became a meme.
