‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: Who is Buffalo?
Were you as surprised as we were with that twist on the season 12 premiere of “The Masked Singer” when one Buffalo turned into a herd? We were wowed by their harmonies on the classic Cutting Crew track “(I Just) Died In Your Arms.” These three clearly make their livings by raising their voice in song. But we don’t think that they are one of the groups mentioned by the judges: B2K (Jenny), Earth, Wind & Fire (Rita) or 3/4 of 98 Degrees (Robin).
We’ve been reviewing the clues and that stand-out performance on September 25 as well as their encore appearances on October 2 and October 9 and have all your “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is Buffalo”?
More from GoldDerby
We think that Buffalo is Boyz II Men (Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris and Shawn Stockman). Don’t agree with our verdict? Well considering the following evidence from their first and second appearances:
The Buffalo costumes are adorned with an eagle; the Boyz were raised in Philadelphia, which is home to an NFL team called the Eagles (that also ties in to the visual clue of a football poster). Another visual clue is a set of two photos of Betty White and Vanna White; Boyz II Men were clad all in white in one of their most iconic videos, “Doin’ Just Fine.”
The first Buffalo makes mention of travelling the world (the group still tours extensively), being on the Walk of Fame (they got their star back in 2021) and guesting on two of TV’s top sitcoms (the Boyz appeared on both “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and “How I Met Your Mother”).
The ambassador is Season 5 champ Nick Lachey (Piglet), who has been pals with this trio ever since they toured with Nick and the rest of 98 Degrees back in 2013.
In week two, the Buffalo sang “Waiting For a Girl Like You” by Foreigner. Their harmonizing matched that of Boyz II Men so clearly. Before launching into that song, the Buffalo declared, “If you think we take ourselves too seriously, look at us, we’re out here looking like some ‘WrestleMania’ Buffalos.” Boyz II Men sang “America the Beautiful” at WrestleMania XV back in 1999.
Their first four albums were released by Motown; that record label was front and center when the Men in Black rode out on a lawn mower that had a license plate that read “Mo-Town.”
One of their first hit singles on that label, “Sympin,” sampled the Bell Biv DeVoe track “Poison.” One of the visual clues in week two was a black bottle marked “Poison.”
In week three, the Buffalo sang two songs. First they crooned the tune “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve. Then in the Battle Royale against the Ship, they delivered a winning cover of “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac.
There has been chatter online that Buffalo is comprised of several of the Wayan Brothers. In particular, fans have connected the week one clue with Betty and Vanna to the flick “White Chicks.” Keenen Ivory Wayans directed that hit comedy, which starred his younger brothers Marlon and Shawn. Another brother, Damon Wayans, played a ex-NFL star in the movie “The Last Boy Scout”; one of the week one visual clues was a photo of a football player.
We will only find out if we are right that Buffalo is Boyz II Men when they are unmasked. That will happen when they lose a vote or wins the show. Do you think we are right about the true identity of Buffalo? Sound off in the comments section with your best guesses.
