'Masked Singer' elimination reveals rock star currently embroiled in lawsuit with former bandmate

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for the season finale of The Masked Singer.

It was a double elimination night on The Masked Singer Wednesday ahead of next week’s season finale, and while the two celebs who were unmasked know a thing or two about hit songs, only one of them is currently embroiled in a legal battle with his former famous bandmate.

Looking to take the one remaining spot in the finale were the three remaining singers left in Group C: Candelabra, Donut and Anteater. The theme for Wednesday was Soundtrack to My Life, featuring songs that represent big moments in their lives.

So here’s a look at who’s under a couple more masks and who’s moving on to sing for the Golden Mask trophy next week.

A very famous mustache

After performing the Chuck Berry classic “Johnny B. Goode,” the first singer to leave the competition was Anteater. Judge guesses included names like Steven Van Zandt, Billy Joel, Jackson Browne and John Cougar Mellencamp.

But none of those were correct, as Anteater was revealed to be singer/songwriter John Oates, one half of the rock duo Hall & Oates. And this actually marks the second time in the past few weeks Oates has been in the headlines, because after 33 Billboard Hot 100 hits, 14 million albums sold and more than 50 years together, Darryl Hall is suing Oates.

Of course, that was not discussed as Oates said goodbye to the show, but rather how this was “one of the best things” he’s ever done, pointing to the freedom of singing under a mask and nobody knowing who you are as reasons.

As far as why he chose the anteater costume, Oates had the perfect explanation to Billboard and one that the judges will kick themselves over because of the obvious clue involved.

“I thought maybe it was a subtle connection between ‘Man Eater’ and Anteater, which I thought might be a subtle clue without being a clue,” Oates said, in reference to the 1982 Hall & Oates hit song.

A fire goes out

With Anteater gone, that meant Donut and Candelabra would face off in the Battle Royale to determine the night’s big winner and future finalist. Season three’s Astronaut Hunter Hayes was there to perform and lend his song, “Wanted,” for the battle.

After Candelabra and Donut delivered their takes on the song, it was Donut who glazed a path to the finale while Candelabra was all out of fire and had to be revealed.

As far as judge guesses go, Ken Jeong went with Kelly Rowland and Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg guessed Brandy, but both were wrong. Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke, on the other hand, worked together to come up with singer Keyshia Cole, and they were right!

Cole, who has been dubbed the Princess of Hip-hop Soul, is best known for songs like “Let It Go” and “(When You Gonna) Give It Up to Me,” along with appearing on the BET reality show, Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, which ran for three seasons from 2006 to 2008 and became one of the network’s most-watched programs ever.

Many viewers reacting on social media were pretty much in line with Scherzinger and Thicke and knew that it was Cole, while others were just frustrated to see her go this close to the finale.

Looking ahead

This tenth season of The Masked Singer will conclude with a two-hour episode on Wednesday, Dec. 20. The remaining four celebrity contestants will perform new songs before the audience and panel votes. Then after the bottom two singers are unmasked, the final two will go head-to-head in one last Battle Royale, with the winner taking home the Golden Mask trophy.

The Masked Singer season finale airs Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. on Fox, and will be available for streaming on Hulu.
