Mary Cosby Calls Son’s Relationship ‘Toxic,’ but Knows to ‘Back Off’

Last week, it was revealed that the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Mary Cosby’s son, Robert Cosby Jr., is currently seeking treatment in an inpatient treatment facility. Mary has often shared the small screen with her son. Even though the young adult never seemed to love the cameras, he always put on a happy face for his mother. However, Mary often found it hard to keep her opinions about his relationship to herself.

Mary Cosby gives a moving update on her son’s journey

During the Season 5 trailer, Mary was filmed in an extremely emotional scene with her son while at their Utah home. Bravo cameras caught the preacher telling her son, “You know how that would kill me. If something ever happened to you.” The tears were real as Mary relived that serious moment. Looking back, Mary opened up to ET sharing, “In that moment, Robert was telling me he was on substances and didn’t want to live. And that was an eye-opener for me. Not realizing ‘you don’t want to live.’ I don’t have thoughts like that.” Mary added, “I came to the realization that it was the substance that alters your thoughts. And I was like, ‘if you’re not here, I don’t have anything to live for.’ And I wanted him to know that.”

The scene was filmed months ago, but Mary assured viewers her son was “doing good. He’s taking it day by day.” When the host asked whether or not Robert Jr had finally moved out, Mary joked, “No, he’s moved out. He’s got his own place,” then explained, “Yes, he’s still here. And he is not legally married. Thank God.” Robert Jr’s girlfriend is still very much in the picture and doesn’t have the stamp of approval from Mary, who quipped, “I just think they are toxic. They create toxicity. The more I push it, the more he will gravitate towards her.” But Mary is just happy her son is on the mend and working on himself.
