Marvel Zombies (TV-MA!), Spider-Man, Eyes of Wakanda (Iron Fist?!) and Other Animated Series Get Updates at D23
Marvel’s animated TV series got in on the D23 action on Saturday, with a flurry of fun reveals summarized below.
Marvel Zombies
Marvel Zombies, spun off of the fifth episode of Disney+’s animated What If…? anthology and in the works since November 2021, commanded some of the biggest buzz by revealing that it will arrive with a TV-MA (for mature audiences only) rating.

Alas, Marvel Zombies won’t be arriving “for a while,” it was made clear at that panel, even though it will span just four episodes.
On the “casting” front, it was disclosed that Shang-Chi’s title character along with Katy, Wenwu and Death Dealer will be featured, as will federal agent Jimmy Woo.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Announced almost three years ago as Spider-Man: Freshman Year, this animated series will follow Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man, “with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen.”
Specifically, footage played at D23 revealed that Peter gets bitten by a spider that tumbles out of a portal along with Doctor Strange, who is mid-fight with a symbiote!
At D23, it was announced that Hudson Thames, who voiced Peter in What If…?, will do same on this new series, while Colman Domingo (Euphoria) will voice Norman Osborn — who in this reality, is Peter’s “man in the chair.”

X-Men ’97
Season 2 of the acclaimed X-Men: The Animated Series follow-up will feature the characters of Apocalypse, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, Havock, Mariko, Polaris and Danger. It was also revealed that the X-Men in Season 2 will don the suits from the Grant Morrison comic books.
“As with all costume changes, this decision was rooted in story for me and the themes Season 2 will explore,” Beau DeMayo, who created X-Men ’97 but parted ways with Marvel ahead of its launch, shared on X. “Obviously, these suits have strong ties to Genosha and [the] E Is for Extinction [story arc].”
Eyes of Wakanda
Developed by Todd Harris, this animated expansion of the Black Panther movie world will focus on how the hidden nation’s past helped shape its future. Like Marvel Zombies, it will also be just four episodes.
Harris teased the MCU introduction of a major new character called Noni, a fighter from Wakanda’s past, as well as the “intersection” of “unbeknownst characters in the Marvel Universe that also are from secret cities, whose name also are a title, and they have a glowing fist.”
What If…?
The third and final season of the animated anthology will feature Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight, Shang Chi, White Vision, Ironheart, Wong(ers!), Scarlet Witch, Monica Rambeau and Captain America — and a mech-focused episode titled, “Go-Avengers: Heroes of the Gamma War.”
