Martha Stewart Says It Was 'Very Easy' to Keep Affair a Secret: 'You Have to Be Circumspect'
For Martha Stewart , it was no problem with keeping her extramarital affair hidden from her ex-husband, Andrew Stewart.
But the retail businesswoman and author, 83, doesn't appear to have any regrets about cheating on her former spouse, whom Stewart was married to from 1961 to 1990. Weeks after the debut of her Martha documentary trailer, Stewart was interviewed by American businessman Lee Brian Schrager during the Martha Stewart's 100th Book Party Celebration on Wednesday (October 16). Although the event was intended to celebrate Stewart's upcoming cookbook , Schrager found it suitable to ask about the affair.
"If you‘re looking for ideas [for a 101st book], maybe you could talk about how you [had] an affair that happened 30 years ago and you kept it a secret. How is that possible?" Schrager asked Stewart in the video provided by Daily Mail .
Unflinchingly, Stewart called it "very easy." "You have to be circumspect," she said.
The question was similar to one that Stewart was asked around the 30-second mark of the Martha trailer above.
"Young women, listen to my advice, if you’re married and your husband starts to cheat on you, he’s a piece of shit,” Stewart warned female viewers. "Get out of that marriage."
"Didn’t you have an affair early on?" an off-camera producer asks.
Martha admits, "Yeah, but I don’t think Andy ever knew about that."
Upon marriage, Stewart was 19 while her then-husband, a Yale University law student at the time, was 23. The two wed shortly after meeting during a blind date. The former spouses share a daughter, Alexis, 59. While Stewart never remarried, Andy would go on to marry (and later, divorce) Stewart's former assistant, Robyn Fairclough, before marrying a third time to his current wife, Shyla Nelson Stewart.
In 2020, Stewart called divorce a "terrible thing" for her during an interview with People .
"Getting divorced was a terrible thing for me, because we were the first to divorce in my family," she told the publication. "And that we haven’t spoken since the divorce is even more painful. But I’m very strong, and I’m very motivated to get on with life."
