Mark Burnett’s Fox Dating Reality Series ‘Coupled’ Canceled After One Season
Fox has opted not to renew dating reality series Coupled for a second season. The show, from top unscripted producer Mark Burnett, struggled to get traction with viewers, ending its quiet summer run last week with 1.1 million viewers and a 0.4 adults 18-49 rating in Live+same day.
“It’s hard to say exactly what didn’t work,” Fox TV Group chairman Dana Walden said at TCA today. “It’s a fragile situation when they do work. Mark delivered a beautiful-looking show, that didn’t resonate with our viewers.”
Set in the Caribbean Islands, Coupled, hosted by Terrence J, featured single men and women who, after face-to-face meetings, pick a mate based on instant chemistry.
“It probably felt a little bit too close to other reality shows being done well right now,” Walden said. “There wasn’t any need to do another relationship show on an island.”
Burnett is back in business with Fox with a new series, an interactive musical game show based on the Shazam app. It was announced at TCA today.
“We’re exciting to be working with him again,” Walden said.
Fox’s other new summer reality series John Cena’s American Grit, was recently renewed for a second season.
