Mariah Carey said she felt ‘emotionally and physically safer’ to have no contact with sister Alison before her death

Mariah Carey had a troubling relationship with her late sister, Alison Carey.

Alison, 63, was estranged from the famous singer, 55, for many years before she died on the same day as their mom Patricia, 87, this past weekend. Both causes of death are unknown.

David Baker, a friend of Alison’s for nine years, told PEOPLE that Alison and Mariah hadn’t seen each other since either 1994 or 2002.

Four years ago, Mariah explained that she cut ties with Alison, Patricia and her brother, Morgan Carey, in her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.”

“For my sanity and peace of mind, my therapist encouraged me to literally rename and reframe my family,” she wrote in her book.

“My mother became Pat to me, Morgan my ex-brother and Alison my ex-sister … I had to stop expecting them to one day miraculously become the mommy, big brother and big sister I fantasized about.

“I had to stop making myself available to be hurt by them. It has been helpful. I have no doubt it is emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact with my ex-brother and ex-sister,” the “Hero” singer added.

Mariah described her sister as “deeply wounded” in her book, saying that Alison witnessed “things a child should never see” before Mariah was born.

“I do know that what she experienced damaged and derailed her girlhood,” said Mariah. “She was fully aware when the family unit unraveled and our parents turned on each other; she absorbed the full pain of a family coming undone.”

The Grammy Award winner also shockingly claimed that Alison drugged her with Valium when she was just 12 years old and left her prey to one of her boyfriends.

Alison denied the allegations and later sued her famous sister, claiming “intentional infliction of immense emotional distress caused by defendant’s heartless, vicious, vindictive, despicable and totally unnecessary public humiliation of defendant’s already profoundly damaged older sister.”

NBC News found a summons listed in New York, but additional information on the status of that suit could not be found.

Morgan, 64, also sued Mariah over her memoir, after the singer claimed her brother got violent with their mom Patricia and dad Alfred, who died in 2002.

Mariah’s brother said her book cost him work opportunities in the lawsuit. Mariah later responded to the suit and said she was trying to “inspire” people by sharing Morgan’s story.

Per TODAY.com, New York Supreme Court records show that the defamation suit filed by him remains active in the court.

After the deaths of her mom and sister, Mariah released a statement to The Post on Monday, saying, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend.”

“Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Mariah added. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Baker told PEOPLE that Alison entered hospice three weeks before her death and “had a problem with internal organs.”

“We saw it coming, but it’s still a shock,” he said. “She got ill fairly quickly and a month later, she’s gone.”

In an interview with the Sun, Baker claimed Alison “was unhappy” that Mariah “had cut off contact with her.” He also said that Mariah didn’t reach out to Alison, despite being told that her older sister was going to pass away.
