Margot Robbie comes aboard to star in a new 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie for Disney
Margot Robbie is sailing into new blockbuster waters, veering from Harley Quinn's girl gang to having her own Disney buccaneer squad.
The Oscar-nominated Australian actress is reteaming with "Birds of Prey" screenwriter Christina Hodson to star in a new female-fronted "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, a person familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly about it confirms to USA TODAY.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming project is in early development and will be separate from a "Pirates" franchise reboot coming from "Chernobyl" creator Craig Mazin, but both films will be produced by action-movie guru Jerry Bruckheimer.

Robbie's "Pirates" will feature new characters and won't be a spinoff of the Johnny Depp movies that made a $4.5 billion treasure trove for Disney beginning with the original 2003 film based on the theme-park ride.
Hodson, who also wrote the "Transformers" film "Bumblebee," is the writer on the upcoming "The Flash" movie that might bring Michael Keaton's Batman back into the DC fold, while Robbie will next reprise her role as Harley in James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad" sequel (in theaters Aug. 6. 2021).
