Marc Maron’s Gas Leak Story Highlights Failing Infrastructure in the United States
One of the variety of issues that have come up during this year’s presidential primary has been the nation’s poor infrastructure. Marc Maron swung by Conan, and while discussing the issue, he told a story about a recent gas leak at his home in Los Angeles. “It smelled like gas in my house for three days,” said Maron. “Now, I don’t know what I was thinking, but for three days I’m walking around my house going, like, that’s gas.” After contacting the gas company, workers arrived and quickly found the source of the leak, which happened to be right underneath Maron’s brand-new driveway.
The workers eventually found a workaround, sparing Maron’s driveway. But what the gas company revealed instead was more alarming than the leak itself. After the workers explained they didn’t have a valve to hook the new pipe up to the old line because they don’t make them anymore, Maron asked, “How old is the line?” Their response? “He goes ‘1911,’” said Maron. “I said, ‘Is the whole city like that?’ He said, ‘Yeah, don’t tell anybody.’” Maron quickly followed with “That’s how the infrastructure is going to get fixed. One close call at a time.”
