‘Making a Murderer’ Subject Steven Avery Calls In on ‘Dr. Phil’
Part 2 of Dr. Phil McGraw’s latest Making a Murderer special aired Tuesday. Once again, McGraw was joined by Lynn Hartman, the fiancée of Steven Avery, the subject of the hit Netflix docuseries. Though some reports say the pair had split, their relationship appeared intact during the episode.
What made the Oct. 4 show different was that Avery called in. McGraw asked about the allegations made against him. Let’s start with the biggest. “Just straight up, did you murder Teresa Halbach?” asked McGraw. “No, I had nothing to do with it,” Avery answered. When McGraw asked Avery knew who did it, he replied, “Well, I got a hunch, but I ain’t sure.” He declined to say who he thought it was.
Avery also responded to the claim of his ex-fiancée, Jodi Stachowski, that he was abusive and that she ingested rat poison to get away from him. “That’s all false information,” Avery said. “She said she ate rat poison and I didn’t believe her. And so then she did it in front of me and then I believed her. … Then I took her to the hospital. You know, she’s a good person when she don’t drink. But otherwise when you get some alcohol in her, she’s kind of terrible.”
Avery added he was pleased that his nephew Brendan Dassey had his conviction overturned. “Well, it was about time that justice, you know, came like that,” Avery said.
“What is the latest with your case? Are you feeling good about where it is?” asked McGraw. “At this point, everything is going good,” Avery responded. “I got a hunch that the state [Wisconsin] don’t know what to do and they’re kind of getting worried because I got the best lawyer around.”
