From Lil Jon to Rudy, DNC roll call vote features surprise celebrities

CHICAGO — The ceremonial roll call vote at the Democratic National Convention featured surprise celebrity guests representing their states, including rapper Lil Jon and “Rudy” actor Sean Astin.

The roll call vote was a rowdy event, with DJ Cassidy playing different songs for each state as the delegates announced their votes, including Tom Petty’s “Won’t Back Down” for Florida, the Dropkick Murphys’ “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” for Massachusetts, Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” for Michigan, The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” for Nevada and Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” for New Jersey.

Lil Jon, who is from Atlanta, came out for Georgia’s turn and emerged from the stands singing “Turn Down for What.” He joined Georgia Democrats Rep. Sanford Bishop, Rep. Nikema Williams and Sen. Raphael Warnock for a “we’re not going back” chant.

“Lord of The Rings” and “Rudy” actor Sean Astin joined the Indiana delegation for its vote, and “Suits” actor Wendell Pierce joined Louisiana’s. Film director Spike Lee joined the New York delegates.

Other states had a party leader announce their votes, including Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D), Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D).

Earlier Tuesday night, singer Patti LaBelle and rapper Common performed at the event.

Harris was officially nominated Aug. 6 through a virtual roll call vote, weeks ahead of the convention, making Tuesday’s vote a symbolic one.
