Let's Break Down That Wild Finale To "Severance" Season 1
Season 1 of Apple TV's Severance has now ended, and boy, what an amazing first impression it made.
The finale left audiences off on a massive cliffhanger that has them all excited to see what happens to Mark and his co-workers in the next season. In anticipation of it, let's break down everything from that insane finale to Severance Season 1.
WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Mark Learns About Gemma
A shocking twist to come out of this show was that Mark's wife, Gemma, who supposedly died in a car accident, was alive and working at Lumon as the wellness counselor, "Ms. Casey." But now that Mark's "innie" saw a photo of his "outie's" wife, he shouts the truth to his friends before he gets switched off. This revelation could lead to Mark going back into Lumon to try and save his wife.
Burt and Irving
When Irving's innie arrives at the house of his workplace crush, Burt, he is saddened to learn that the latter's outie is already married to another man. But this doesn't stop Irving from banging on the door and calling out to him. The moment we left the show, Irving's innie was shut down before Burt could open the door, so what will happen when they see each other is anyone's guess.
Helly's an Eagan
The biggest twist to come out of the last episode was that Helly R. is the daughter of Lumon CEO Jame Eagan. Her employment was part of the company's plan to convince the government to legalize "severance" by showing how much she "enjoyed" being severed. This explains why her outie was callous towards her innie and was committed to working at Lumon, but now that her innie took control at the company gala, she was finally able to say what had to be said.
The Truth is Outie
Helly's innie spent her last moment awake telling everyone at Lumon's gala how the company was torturing their employees and that they were all unhappy, which will likely damage Lumon's image even more. This could lead to more people outside of Lumon protesting and attempting to boycott the company, which could put it on the defensive in the next season.
Are Dylan and Helly Prisoners?
The finale ended with Helly and Dylan getting tackled to the ground in the middle of their scheme to take down Lumon. It's too soon to say what happened to them, but since Helly is Eagan's daughter, Lumon might go a lot easier on her than on Dylan. However, the two of them being prisoners of the company would give Mark and Irving two more people to save if they try to infiltrate Lumon.
Mark and Irving
Now that Lumon knows that Mark and his team are conspiring against the company, they could now spend the next season trying to capture Mark and Irving. Since they already caught Dylan and Helly inside the building, they could hunt for the other two next, forcing both employees to hide from them, potentially with the anti-Lumon rebels seen earlier in the season.
How Big Is Lumon?
In the season finale, we learned that Lumon has some friends in pretty high places. We now know that a pro-severance senator was buttered up by the company after they gave the procedure to his pregnant wife. Mark's sister, Devon, also warned him about who they tell Lumon's secrets, as they have their hands on plenty of people. Who knows how big the conspiracy is? After all, isn't Lumon just short for "Illuminati"?
What Does Lumon Do?
We have gone through an entire season, but we still don't know what Lumon does. But the final episode implies the company is more about pushing the idea of severance on other people than just functioning under the procedure itself. This scheme very well fits with the cult-like organization we've seen in the company, and their plan to get severance legalized may be part of a plan to put many other people under their control. Who knows? Maybe those weird goats have something to do with it.
