Leah Remini's Interview with Danny Masterson's Rape Accusers Is an Emotional One

The series finale of Leah Remini’s Scientology and the Aftermath aired two nights ago on A&E — and it was an emotional, powerful one. Remini wrapped up the series with an interview with two women who accused Danny Masterson of rape and emotional abuse. Most of the episode, in fact, was dedicated to the experience and testimony of the two accusers.

Masterson, a celebrity Scientologist, has been accused by a number of women of rape and emotional abuse throughout their respective relationships. Chrissie Bixler, one of four women currently suing Masterson and the Church of Scientology, claimed that during her five-year romance with Masterson, Masterson would frequently assault her. She also claimed that he drugged her drink once.

“Last thing I remember is getting up from the restaurant to go home. Complete blackout,” Bixler says during the interview with Remini. “The next day when I woke up, the back of my head hurt, and I thought I’d fallen. I thought I was poisoned. I didn’t know where I was.”

Bixler also shared that after going to church officials to share her experience, she received no sympathy, and actions against Masterson were never taken. “My job as his girlfriend was to give myself to him whenever he wanted,” she says. “I was to lay there and take it.”

Marie Bobette Riales, another accuser, shared a similar experience on the finale. Riales alleged that Masterson, too, would drug her drinks and sexually assault her while she was unconscious. “This wasn’t just a one-night stand or meet-at-a-bar-type thing,” she starts. “I knew that there was something wrong in our relationship itself.”

Riales adding that it was Bixler’s story and Bixler’s courage to come forward that inspired her to share her experience. “Never once did it occur to me that he was doing this to other girls,” Riales concluded.

Masterson has denied the women’s claims, even calling them “ridiculous.”

During its time, the A&E series earned an Emmy for Outstanding Informational Series or Special as Remini became one of the institution’s most vocal critics. Remini ended the finale by imploring her audience and viewers to be vigilant, wise and understand the gravity of the situation involving the Church of Scientology — acknowledging the institution’s harm and lack of justice afforded to victims of abuse.

“Scientology likes to pretend that it’s just like every other religion and should be respected like any other religion,” Remini explained. “And yet it’s the only business on the face of the planet that has never done anything wrong, never admitted to any wrongdoing in its history.”

According to a post from Remini’s Instagram linked to an announcement, the fight is not over.
