Laura Dern says her mom, actress Diane Ladd, gave her a travel case of condoms when she was 16
"You must be protected."
Well, that's one way to use a Samsonite case.
During an appearance on Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson's podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Laura Dern got candid about a time she received a very, ahem, unique gift from her mother, fellow actress Diane Ladd.
"So I'm going off to do a movie, and I'm 16, I think," she told Danson and Harrelson. "And the actor [I was going to work with] also, you know, basically my age, but with a reputation already as a young, gorgeous, young movie star kid, was on that movie. So I'm packing up to get ready, and my mom brings me like a Samsonite makeup case."

Dern said her immediate reaction was "Oh my god, that's so sweet," because she assumed the case was for her "toiletries or something."
"And I open it up and it's full of contraception. Like, rubbers, every rubber, every you know, anything you can imagine for protection. I was like, mom, I'm not having sex yet. Like, what are you talking about?" she said, laughing.
The Oscar-winning Marriage Story actress said she recalled her mom explaining to her, "'Well, you never know. You gotta be protected. You must be protected.'"

Dern, while never mentioning the name of the film or her costar, then told Danson and Harrelson that halfway through shooting the film, she called her mother to inform her that she and her costar liked each other a lot.
"And she goes, 'You're not gonna do it.' And I said, 'Well, I'm not saying we've done anything yet. I'm just telling you I like him. But what are you talking about? You sent me with a suitcase full of birth control!'" Dern recounted, before sharing her mother's hilarious reaction. "She goes, 'Exactly, but not so you would use it!'"
Elsewhere on the podcast, Dern, Harrelson, and Danson discussed how she fell in love with acting as a child, writing a book with her mom, the time a panicked Harrelson wanted to call her up for acting advice, and more.
