‘Last Take’ Trailer Examines Human Toll of Halyna Hutchins’ Death on ‘Rust’ Set
It was a story that shook Hollywood: A scene gone wrong on an independent film killed a rising cinematographer, with a well-known star holding the prop gun that fired the fatal bullet.
Now, a documentary revisiting the death of Halyna Hutchins on the 2021 set of Rust is set to shine a light on the cinematographer and the human toll that the tragedy took on those around her. Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna will feature emotional conversations with Rust director Joel Souza, camera assistant Lane Luper, costume designer Terese Davis and the film’s new cinematographer Bianca Cline talking about the day of Hutchins’ death and the aftermath, the film’s first trailer demonstrated on Monday.

The trailer features police bodycam footage from the investigation of the death, news coverage of the story and what appears to be behind-the-scenes video from Rust. “What people really wanted from this is entertainment,” Souza says in the trailer. Adds Souza in a voiceover, “It was just an ugly frenzy and they erased her from it.”
Hutchins’ close friend, Circus of Books and An Update on Our Family documentary filmmaker Rachel Mason, is directing and also appears in the trailer.
Following the tragedy, Rust was eventually finished and premiered at the 2024 Camerimage festival. Per the terms of a settlement between Hutchins’ widower Matthew and the Rust producers, proceeds from the sale of the film are set to go to Matthew and his and Hutchins’ son.
Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna will premiere on Hulu on March 11. The film was produced by Julee Metz, Kate Barry, Jon Bardin and Will Cohen for Story Syndicate and Jessica Grimshaw, Nick Shumaker and Jennifer Sears for Anonymous Content. Hutchins’ husband Matthew, Story Syndicate’s Dan Cogan, Liz Garbus and Tommy Coriale, Concordia Studio’s Lizzie Fox and Casey Meurer and Anonymous Content’s David Levine are executive producing.
