Lake Bell knows that weddings can be stressful, and now she’s gone and done something about it.
On the latest episode of EW: The Show, the writer, director, and star of the new marital comedy I Do … Until I Don’t breaks down 11 wedding ceremony traditions and whether they’re worth doing. Here’s a quick rundown.
(1) Asking the parents’ permission: “Kind of a classy move. My husband did that before I even knew, and I thought it was very sexy.”
(2) Getting down on one knee: “That is a little old-fashioned. … You might pull your back, the whole thing. So keep it healthy, stand on your two feet, look at the person directly in the eye and say, ‘Come on, let’s do this.'”
(3) Throwing rice: “White rice is not good for you. I would suggest a quinoa, or maybe like a kamut.”
(4) Cocktail hour: “Everybody needs a cocktail hour — how about hours, okay?”
(5) Bouquet toss: “We need to make sure that it’s not just girls. … I like to see the guys there too. Come on, modern times.”
(6) Garter dance: “I think of cowboys and brothels when it comes to garters. … Unless you’re having like a cowboy-brothel wedding, in which case go for gold.”
(7) Best man/maid of honor speeches: “I don’t like giving people homework.”
(8) Father-daughter/mother-son dance: “Come on, it’s sweet.”
(9) After-party: “Obviously.”
(10) Next-day brunch: [sighs]
(11) “You may now kiss the bride”: “Kind of cheesy … Let’s just kiss. ‘Kiss now’ is what they should say.”
