Lady Gaga has made clear that she can do it all—crush it on-stage with her impressive vocals and then blow you away on-screen. Her next big role is Harley Quinn in the Joker sequel Folie à Deux, and the 38-year-old worked hard to change her appearance for the film.
Gaga is already getting praise from her co-star Joaquin Phoenix on her dedication to the movie, with the actor noting that she lost "a lot" of weight for it.
By the way, Joaquin previously lost 52 pounds to play Arthur Fleck in the original Joker, working with a nutritionist on a diet of apples, lettuce, and steamed green beans to appear emaciated, per USA Today. (He lost weight this time around too, but didn’t get into details of how he did so.) But Joaquin said he’s not interested in doing that again in the future.
“I'm 49. I probably shouldn't do this again. This is probably it for me,” he said in September at the Venice Film Festival, per Variety.
So, what did Lady Gaga do to lose weight for the movie? Here’s what she shared.
Did Lady Gaga lose weight for ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’?
Yes, Lady Gaga lost weight for Joker: Folie à Deux. She “lost a lot of weight,” Joaquin said at a September press conference, per Variety.
“I remember when I first met you in rehearsals and then you went away for like a month and then you came back, you lost a lot of weight,” he continued. “It was really impressive. It seemed very difficult.”
Gaga added, “We transformed into our characters over a period of time and we continued to hone in every kind of detail.”
Last year, Gaga got a lot of attention after sharing video of herself on TikTok where she appeared to have lost a significant amount of weight.
What is Lady Gaga’s diet?
Lady Gaga didn’t get into details about how she lost weight for the role. However, she’s shared little snippets here and there about her overall eating plan.
Her personal chef Bo O’Connor previously said that Gaga is an “adventurous eater,” although she tries to stay away from ultra-processed foods and things made with white flour.
Breakfast may be something like eggs or egg whites with lots of vegetables, or sometimes Greek yogurt with “healthy granola,” O’Connor told The Feast. “If [Gaga] was in the mood for French toast or something sweeter, we would make a healthier version of that for her,” she added.
She also drinks a lot of tea, fresh coconut water, and fresh green juice.
Lunch is usually a hearty salad. “She definitely will always have a salad throughout the day, whether it's for lunch or dinner," O'Connor told People in 2017.
For dinner, Gaga may have a gluten-free or quinoa pasta, along with vegetables and grilled shrimp.
How does Lady Gaga stay fit?
In addition to following a healthy eating plan, Gaga exercises regularly, having worked with celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak for years. The two usually do 35-minute strength training sessions five days a week, while Gaga tends to get her cardio from performing, he told Us Weekly.
Gaga is also big into yoga and Pilates, and can do moves like inversions, which are definitely not easy:
She knows her way around TRX bands, too, which are used for suspension training to build strength and tone muscles:
