Lady Gaga Says She Will “Definitely Continue Acting” After Pair Of Critics’ Choice Wins
UPDATED with video: After two wins at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday – a co-win for Best Actress, and Best Song in A Star is Born – Lady Gaga told press backstage she was “speechless” because it was her “greatest dream to be an actor.” She once gave up acting, “but here I am now with Glenn Close,” she said, noting her co-winner in the category. “She’s legendary.”
Gaga also said in her remarks backstage at the show (watch them above) that she plans to do a lot more acting in future.
Doubling down on her accolades, and following her Globes win for the song “Shallow” in A Star is Born, she told press, “I will definitely continue acting,” she said. “I love acting. I loved acting on American Horror Story as the Countess for Ryan Murphy, and I loved acting in A Star is Born for Bradley Cooper. It was a tremendous experience, and I want to continue to do more, but I am a bit spoiled. I’ve had some fantastic directors and fantastic visionaries.”
Blinking from the flashing of many backstage cameras, Gaga also promised more music in future, and said A Star is Born has affected her that too. “Absolutely, it [the film] will influence my future music,” she said. “But that’s not to say I haven’t already written some music, so it will be a mixture of both. But I’ve learned so very much and I hope that I will always be a student. I think that that is where you stop being a great artist when you start believing that there’s nothing left to learn. There is always something to learn and I always want to be a student and I think that’s how you master your craft, by learning and being a sponge.”
But any future plans with Cooper will remain “in a locked box” for now, Gaga said. “I will always be supportive of him in whatever way he chooses to go, and I feel the same way from him. We talk about future films for me, he gives me advice. He’s wonderful, but as far as future collaborations, I guess that’s going to stay a secret.”
In her acceptance speech for Best Actress onstage she seemed overwhelmed, saying, “I’m so honored by this. I went to places in my mind and my heart that I did not know existed.” Then she got the audience laughing as the music began to signify her time was up and she said, “It’s OK, I can still do this with a piano background.”
Earlier in the evening, accepting for Best Song, she also thanked Cooper effusively. “This means the world to us,” she said. “I’ll never forget when we wrote this song together with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.”
Starring as up-and-coming singer Ally, alongside Cooper as addled country singer Jackson Maine, Gaga’s song “Shallow” has become something of an anthem for fans.
“I’ll never forget playing it for Bradley for the first time and seeing his face light up and then singing it live together, take after take,” she said onstage. “I was mesmerized both as myself and as my character Ally. I was basking in the brilliant transformation of Bradley into Jackson Maine, singing on his stage, and overwhelmed by the storytelling and power in his voice.”
