Lady Gaga belts out ‘D–k in a Box’ with Andy Samberg at ‘SNL50: The Homecoming Concert’
The Emmy-winning hit song “D–k in a Box” received a modern-day upgrade at SNL50: The Homecoming Concert by none other than Lady Gaga.
Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake originally performed this “Digital Short” on Saturday Night Live on Dec. 16, 2006, and it quickly went viral. Samberg was present at Friday’s 50-year bash at Radio City Music Hall, but his partner in crime was absent. “Andy, don’t be a bitch, I’ll do it with you,” Gaga told him in front of a packed house of former cast members, hosts, and musical guests. Samberg and Gaga started out their set with a version of “Shallow” from A Star Is Born (2018), but the former’s voice wasn’t quite up to snuff. (Bradley Cooper, where were you?!) So, the duo decided to do “something that’s more in [Samberg’s] vocal range.” The audience knew exactly what they were getting at, and they weren’t disappointed at all by Samberg and Gaga’s version of the naughty tune.
“D–k in a Box” was written by the comedy group The Lonely Island, composed of Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, plus Katreese Barnes, Asa Taccone, and Timberlake. It won the 2007 Emmy Award for Best Music and Lyrics, proving that even TV Academy members have a sense of humor.
After Samberg and Gaga’s heartfelt rendition of “D–k in a Box,” viewers were treated to a compilation of more Lonely Island hits, including most notably “Lazy Sunday” by Samberg and Chris Parnell, which is one of Gold Derby’s 25 favorite SNL sketches of the past 25 years. Other “Digital Shorts” referenced in the hilarious medley were “Dear Sister,” “Jizz in My Pants,” “I’m on a Boat” (with Eddie Vedder), and “I Just Had Sex” (with Bad Bunny).

The tribute ended with an image on the big screen of Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels surrounded by a Canadian flag. Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, this live concert celebration of five decades of SNL music streamed Feb. 14 on Peacock.
Samberg starred on Saturday Night Live from 2005 to 2012. Gaga hosted the program in 2013 and served as the musical guest four times.
This homecoming concert is not to be confused with SNL50: The Anniversary Special, which airs Feb. 16 on NBC and Peacock and focuses instead on sketch comedy. Dozens of A-listers will be in attendance for that event at Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center, including Adam Sandler, Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg, Adam Driver, and Ayo Edebiri … and that’s just the As!
