Kevin Costner endorses Pete Buttigieg: 'We're gonna demand something better'

Pete Buttigieg took some dings at last week’s Democratic debates over his association with billionaire backers and their “wine caves.” Luckily for him, Kevin Costner is here to, in the words of the anonymous voice in Field of Dreams, ease his pain.

Costner turned up in Indianola, Iowa — the state in which his 1989 film about a corn field turned baseball diamond is set — on Sunday to endorse Buttigieg for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Taking the stage at a town hall hosted at Indianola High School, the 64-year-old star introduced the South Bend, Ind. mayor.

“Whether your road leads you to Pete, like mine has, that’s for you to judge,” Costner told the crowd, according to Fox News’s Tara Prindiville. “But every four years we get the chance to either hold the course we’re on or set up a signal that we’ve tried it and it’s not right. And we’re gonna demand something better.”

Footage from the event shows the actor calling Buttigieg “a man who not only understands how the world looks at us, but how history will, and how we ought to look at ourselves.”

The Oscar winner added that Buttigieg “won’t compete to be the loudest.

“I don’t see his arms flapping. His silences are those of someone who can wait until he has something worked out in his mind to speak.”

The Yellowstone star left the stage after embracing Buttigieg, who appeared with his go-to campaign anthem, “High Hopes” by Panic! at the Disco, playing.

It’s not Costner’s first foray into politics. Though he was once a Republican who reportedly struck up a friendship with former President Ronald Reagan, the Dances with Wolves star has since identified himself as a registered Independent while supporting Democratic politicians like Barack Obama.

Earlier this year, Costner caused a stir when he criticized President Donald Trump and expressed hope that former first lady Michelle Obama might run for president.

Meanwhile, the Buttigieg campaign is having a little fun with the mayor’s new endorsement.
