Kesha Found Inspiration For Her New Single In Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Kesha says her new single, “Here Comes the Change,” is not only a tribute to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg but also a call for people to get out and vote.
In an essay on Refinery29, the singer-songwriter describes the process of writing a new song with Wrabel and Drew Pearson for the film “On the Basis of Sex,” a biographical drama about Ginsburg.
“When I was first approached to write a song for the movie, I thought I was the wrong person for the job,” Kesha wrote. “For me, songwriting is such a personal process and it is almost always inspired by things I’ve experienced in my own life. The idea that I should be writing about someone else’s life, and that person would be Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was intimidating. How could my voice matter in this context? I thought to myself.”
But once Kesha watched the film, she says, she found inspiration.
“I was struck by how much Ginsburg was able to accomplish in her life, and at the same time, how much more there is to do in the fight for equality for all people,” Kesha said.
She added that it’s possible to have an impact, even if you’re not as heroic as Ginsburg and others who have fought for civil rights.
“We can all vote and speak up for what we believe in,” Kesha wrote. “We can all have a positive impact on our shared future.”
