Kathy Griffin supports Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong amid Trump mask backlash
When it comes to Donald Trump, Billie Joe Armstrong is pushing the envelope — and comedian Kathy Griffin wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Green Day frontman has come under fire for holding up a Donald Trump mask while performing in Washington, D.C., on Monday night.
In a fan-filmed video from the band’s Saviors Tour stop at Nationals Park, Armstrong can be seen hoisting the mask of the former president with the word “IDIOT” written across its forehead.
While one of the Instagram users who shared the clip said they didn’t believe Armstrong actually had “a violent intention as if it’s a severed head,” online reaction was swift, with some slamming the “American Idiot” singer for the gesture — particularly following the assassination attempt on Trump at a rally on July 13.
“Green Day had a concert here in DC last night. They decided it’d be a good idea to hold up a severed Trump head. Just TWO WEEKS after he was shot in the head. These people are SICK,” conservative journalist Nick Sortor tweeted.
The blowback harkens back to the public ire that Griffin experienced after posing for a 2017 photo that showed her holding what looked like Trump’s severed head covered in blood.
The “My Life on the D-List” star took to social media Thursday to show her support for Armstrong.
“I see you @GreenDay & @billiejoe,” she wrote on X, alongside a similar concert shot of Armstrong holding up the mask in his hand.
In the aftermath of her own backlash, Griffin, 63, was the subject of a two-month federal investigation and lost high-profile endorsement deals and comedy bookings.
