Kathleen Turner takes center stage in ‘A Little Night Music’ at Ogunquit Playhouse
OGUNQUIT, Maine — Stage and screen star Kathleen Turner is about to join the ranks of acting legends who have performed at the Ogunquit Playhouse.
The theater announced on June 26 that Turner will lead the cast of the upcoming production of “A Little Night Music,” the curtains for which will rise on July 18. Turner will portray Madame Armfeldt in the musical tribute to composer Stephen Sondheim.
Bradford Kenney, the executive artistic director at the Playhouse, and Deborah Warren, the theater’s managing director, said they were “thrilled” to announce the casting of Turner.
Directed by Hunter Foster, the show will run at the Playhouse through Aug. 17.
On the silver screen, Turner is best known for her roles in some of Hollywood’s most celebrated comedies, adventures and dramas, including “Body Heat,” “Romancing the Stone,” “Prizzi’s Honor,” “Peggy Sue Got Married,” “The Accidental Tourist,” “The War of the Roses,” and “The Virgin Suicides.” She also provided the voice of Jessica Rabbit in the groundbreaking 1988 classic, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”
Turner also has made her mark on Broadway, starring in productions of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “Indiscretions,” “The Graduate,” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.”
She also is a director, a teacher of master classes, and an activist for women’s health and other issues.
The Ogunquit Playhouse described “A Little Night Music” as “full of hilariously witty and heartbreakingly moving moments of adoration, regret, and desire” and called it a “musical celebration of love.” The play has won six Tony awards, including one for Best Musical, and features the timeless, iconic Sondheim song, “Send in the Clowns.”
“A Little Night Music” will be presented through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International, according to the Playhouse. All authorized performance materials are also supplied, the Playhouse added.
