Kate Hudson recalls cursing out troll who said she’s ‘too old’ for singing career: ‘F–k you’
Penny Lane just wants to sing.
Kate Hudson has two words for anyone who slams her singing career — “f – – k you.” That’s exactly what she said when she recalled a critic telling her she wasn’t young enough to launch a singing career.
“There was someone who said to me — and it kind of jarred me a little — it was when I was in my early 30s, and they basically said, ‘It’s done, it’s passed. You can’t, you’re too old,’ ” Hudson said in an interview with CBS’s “Sunday Morning,” which aired Sunday.
“And you know, for me, it wasn’t just about being a performer, it was about wanting to write music,” she went on. “So it kind of, like, kind of resonated there for a bit.”
“And then I was like, ‘Eh, f – – k you.’ No, no one tells me what to do.”
Hudson’s debut album, “Glorious,” will be released on May 17.
“I just don’t care anymore about what people think, probably,” she said of focusing on music now. “It was never right, whether it was my own stuff or feeling afraid to mess up my movie career — just never felt right. Until now. I’m just doing it.”
She added that she’s written songs her “whole life,” but “really poorly.”
The “Almost Famous” actress quipped: “I guess I wasn’t ready for it until now.”
Hudson has even auditioned for musical films over the years.
“Any musical that you’ve seen in the last 15 years, I have auditioned for it!” she laughed. “Oh, oh God, I’ll never forget one of my favorite auditions of all time was ‘Moulin Rouge’ with Baz Luhrmann. And we had so much fun. And at the time, it was written for — I was like 19 at the time — it was actually written for a young girl, and Nicole [Kidman] ended up doing it — she wanted to do it! And I was like, ‘Oh well, my chances are gone!’ I mean, all of them, a ton. That’s what we do: We audition!”
Hudson, the daughter of Goldie Hawn and the Hudson Brothers musician Bill Hudson (and stepdad Kurt Russell), is also heading on tour once her music drops.
“It just feels, like, normal,” she said on CBS’s “Sunday Morning.” “They say, like, when you’re ready to solo for the first time, you should be kicking the instructor out the plane, like, ‘Get out of here! I’m ready!’ And that’s kind of what I feel like right now. I just feel like I’m ready to do it. I don’t have the fear. I just have excitement. It’s wild.”
