Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick release 'True Colors' cover from Trolls
Four months after wowing Cannes with an acoustic rendition of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors," Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick have released the official track.
The song, which appeared on Lauper's 1986 album of the same name, was repurposed for Timberlake and Kendrick's upcoming animated musical flick, Trolls. Based on the classic, colorful dolls, the Dreamworks film follows two trolls on a quest to save their happy town from destruction by the evil Bergens. Timberlake stars as a grump gray survivalist named Branch, while Kendrick portrays his unlikely companion Poppy, a peppy pink troll and queen of their village.
"The trolls are the happiest creatures in the world. They have been living in peace and safety for 20 years...[Poppy has] been a slightly irresponsible leader in that she has made no safety precautions against [monsters called] the Bergens," Kendrick told EW of Trolls' premise. "I seek out Branch to help me rescue my friends, and he doesn’t want to. So I decide to go on my own, but I leave him surrounded by all the happiest trolls and figure he’s going to choose the death-defying adventure over staying with a bunch of happy trolls."
James Corden, Gwen Stefani, John Cleese, Ron Funches, Zooey Deschanel, Kunal Nayyar, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Icona Pop, and Russell Brand also lent their voices to the film.
"True Colors" is just one in a slew of star-powered contributions to the Trolls soundtrack, which Timberlake curated as the the movie's executive music producer. Also included are his hit single "Can't Stop the Feeling" a tune from Ariana Grande, and songs from costars Kendrick, Stefani, Corden, and Deschanel.
Trolls hits theaters Nov. 4. Listen to "True Colors" below.
