Justin Theroux reveals where you can see his rescue dog in 'Lady and the Tramp'
The canine cast of Disney’s live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp are almost all first-time actors... but one comes with a special pedigree. Speaking with Yahoo Entertainment, Justin Theroux — who voices the roguish Tramp — reveals that his dog, Kuma, makes a cameo appearance in the new movie, which is currently available to watch on the Mouse House’s new streaming service, Disney+. Late in the film, the Tramp’s beloved Lady (voiced by Tessa Thompson) is taken to a dog pound and the first pup she passes is Kuma. “If you keep your eyes open and don’t blink, you will see her,” Theroux says proudly. (Fast-forward to the 61-minute mark for your own Kuma sighting, or just watch our video interview above.)
While she may have a famous owner, Kuma has quite a bit in common with the rest of her co-stars: She’s also a rescue dog. Lady and the Tramp director Charlie Bean and the rest of the production team made a point of assembling an ensemble of rescue dogs for the film, all of whom have since found homes. (Yvette Nicole Brown, who has a small role in the film, added one of the dogs to her household.) Theroux and Kuma found each other in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, and the actor officially adopted her in 2018. She’s since become a regular presence on his Instagram, with the two recently recreating a classic moment from both versions of Lady and the Tramp.
While Theroux is thrilled that Kuma is making her feature film debut, he’s happier that Lady and the Tramp is providing a showcase for rescue dogs like Monte, who plays the Tramp onscreen and joined the actor for our interview. “This is a story about a homeless dog, and a dog that has a home. It’s one of those things you’re so excited to promote because... story behind the movie is cool and obviously the movie is beautiful.”
Lady and the Tramp is currently streaming on Disney+.
