Just in time for summer, this Knoxville quarry is ... closing? Here's what you should know
There's never a good time to announce one of South Knoxville's favorite places is closing, even if temporarily. But announcing the closing of a quarry just as the weather begins warming ? that's just plain upsetting.
However, the planned improvements for Augusta Quarry should make the swimming hole more enjoyable for guests in the long run.
Here's what's in the works, according to a news release from the city of Knoxville:
New restrooms and changing rooms
New vendor pavilion
Expanded overlook on the western side of the quarry
New floating bench and swim platforms on the quarry's edges, as well as a circular offshore floating dock
Improved walkway and new partially terraced gathering spaces connecting the parking lot and water
When will Augusta Quarry close and for how long?
Work began in March, according to the city, and the contractor has permission to move ahead with utility installation.
This phase, as well as the construction, will keep the quarry closed until amenities are fully installed. That's expected to happen by summer 2024.
"The full closure is imminent," city spokesperson Eric Vreeland told Knox News via email.
Is Augusta Quarry the same as Fort Dickerson Quarry?
There's no such thing as Fort Dickerson Quarry, though this name is sometimes used interchangeably with Augusta Quarry due to its location at Fort Dickerson Park.
The park is located at 3000 Fort Dickerson Road, just off Chapman Highway, though quarry parking can be found at 560 Augusta Ave.
Where else can I do water activities in Knoxville?
The most similar swimming hole is Mead's Quarry Lake at Ijams Nature Center, which is less than 5 miles away.
Of course, the Tennessee River flows along downtown Knoxville and has plenty of activities to enjoy.
Knoxville Adventure Collective offers several guided and self-guided activities on the river. Canoes, paddleboards and kayaks can be rented for up to two hours, starting around $20.
Who is paying for the quarry improvements?
Following the completion of upgrades to the entrance and parking area in 2019, these new improvements will bring the city's total investment to more than $5 million.
The city has partnered with the Aslan Foundation on the improvements.
Is Augusta or Mead's quarry best for me?
During a normal summer, you would have the choice ? and there's a lot to consider. Do you have kids? What's your fitness level? And, perhaps most notably, are you in the mood to party or relax?
Augusta has the reputation for hosting a more lively crowd, while Mead's is known as a peaceful escape within Ijams Nature Center.

What other work is being done at Fort Dickerson?
The city's next step at Fort Dickerson is improving the eastern overlook at the park and "protecting and enhancing access to the historic Civil War earthworks."
Is Fort Dickerson Park completely closed?
The park's picnic areas and 3.5 miles of trails on the eastern side will remain open, according to the city.
