‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Hitting Max Next Weekend
Warner Bros. very ambitious Todd Phillips musical sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will debut on Max on Friday, Dec. 13 with a linear premiere on HBO on Dec. 14 at 8PM EST.
The movie, which saw Joaquin Phoenix reprise his Oscar winning role of the DC villain, also starred Lady Gaga. The first 2019 movie was at one point, before Marvel Studios/Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine unseated it, the highest grossing R-rated movie of all-time at $1.1 billion. The sequel was fully rejected by moviegoers with a D Cinemascore, opening to an awful $37.6M stateside (versus the first movie’s record October bow of $96.2M) and finaling at $58.3M domestic, $206.4M worldwide off a $190M production cost before P&A. Reports have suggested that the sequel will lose around $100M.

Part deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him. The movie also stars Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener, alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from the first movie.
Phillips, in addition to directing, co-wrote the screenplay with Oscar nominee Scott Silver. The movie was produced by Phillips, Oscar nominee Emma Tillinger Koskoff, and Joseph Garner. Lady Gaga served as music consultant. Pic’s executive producers are Michael E. Uslan, Georgia Kacandes, Silver, Mark Friedberg, and Jason Ruder.
