โJoker: Folie รก Deuxโ Casting Director โSurprisedโ Lady Gaga Could Keep Up with Joaquin Phoenix
Considering Todd Phillipsโ DC sequel โJoker: Folie รก Deuxโ is known to be jukebox musical that may or may not feature original songs as well, the casting of renowned pop singer and actress Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn should make a lot of sense, but in fact, didnโt at first to the person in charge.
As reported on by Deadline, speaking at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, โJoker: Folie รก Deuxโ casting director Francine Maisler shared her thoughts on Gagaโs performance and how impressed she was by her work.

โSheโs so good in it, you guys. Sheโs going to blow your mind. I didnโt suggest Lady Gaga. It wasnโt my idea. That was Todd Phillips, before me,โ said Maisler. โBut I will tell you, sheโs really surprising โ and really good. I saw it and I was really surprised. I mean, we all knew what she could do in โA Star is Born,โ but I thought, โOh, well, thatโs kind of in her wheelhouse.โ Something she could do and just be real. But thisโฆ Man, sheโs good. Joaquin blows your mind, but that she could keep up with him, and be real โ and not just wiped off the screen by what that role is and what the performance is โ shows sheโs good.โ
In discussing her take on the character compared to others like Margot Robbie, Lady Gaga said in an interview with Access Hollywood, โYou know my version of Harley is mine and itโs very authentic to this movie and these characters. Iโve never done anything this like Iโve done in a movie before, so itโs all going to be completely brand new and really fun.โ
Having also been responsible for the casting of Jeff Nicholsโ โThe Bikeridersโ starring buzzy trio Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, and Jodie Comer, as well as Denis Villeneuveโs all-star sequel โDune: Part Two,โ it may seem like Maislerโs job is mostly about courting celebrities, but she disagrees.
โItโs not about whoโs hot, whoโs popular,โ she said. โWhen you have a movie like โDune,โ and especially โDune: Part Two,โ everybody wants to be part of it. So, the director has everybody to choose from. Thatโs how it works. You just have everybody raising their hands, and some people arenโt available. In this case, they all happened to be available.โ
