Johnny Manziel Posts Bail After Turning Himself in for Assault Charges – Then Jokes About His Mugshot on Twitter
Johnny Manziel turned himself in to Texas police on Wednesday where he was booked on a misdemeanor assault charge – then took to social media to joke about his mugshot.
The 23-year-old former Cleveland Browns quarterback spent less than two hours in Highland Park Police custody after turning himself in and being booked on a domestic violence charge stemming from a January incident in which he allegedly hit his girlfriend repeatedly, Highland Park Department of Public Safety Lt. Lance Koppa tells PEOPLE.
The embattled athlete posted the $1,500 bail and took an official mugshot before being released – a photo he seems to be particularly proud of.
"Just thankful I had a shirt this time … " Manziel wrote in a now-deleted Twitter post.
The tweet seemed to be a reference to the free agent's 2012 mugshot, which surfaced after he was arrested in a bar fight at Texas A&M University, according to ESPN.
Although Manziel deleted the post, social media users were able to take photos of the tweet.
One user uploaded the former NFL star's post and wrote, "Johnny Manziel is v. classy. Booked tonight for domestic violence."

Manziel is expected to appear in court Thursday in connection with the alleged altercation between himself and ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley that began at a Dallas hotel, ESPN reports.
Crowley told authorities that Manziel hit her so hard she briefly lost her hearing after the two got into a heated argument, according to an affidavit obtained by PEOPLE. She claimed that he threatened to kill her and himself.
A Texas grand jury indicted the star in April on a charge of family violence assault. At the time, his attorney, Jim Darnell, released a statement to media outlets that his client would plead not guilty.
The indictment came just days after the former first round draft pick lost his second agent in less than three months.
Drew Rosenhaus dropped Manziel as a client after threatening to do so unless the star changed his partying ways and sought help, ESPN reports. In February, Erik Burkhardt announced that he was cutting ties with the former NFL star.
Shortly after being dropped by Rosenhaus, Manziel said in a statement that he is focusing on getting back out on the field. He was drafted by the Browns in 2014 and dropped by the team in March, CBS Sports reports.
"I'm hoping to take care of the issues in front of me right now, so I can focus on what I have to do if I want to play in 2016," he said in a statement provided to ESPN. "I also continue to be thankful to those who really know me and support me."
