Johnny Depp Makes Comeback in Steamy French Drama Jeanne du Barry
Johnny Depp makes his return to the silver screen with Jeanne du Barry, a steamy historical drama set in 18th century France.
Depp plays Louis XV, the French king who has an affair with the daughter of an impoverished seamstress, Madame du Barry. The film charts her surprising rise through French nobility, despite being shunned by important figures at the time, including Marie Antoinette.
Depp hasn’t been seen on screens for years. Famously, Warner Bros. replaced him as the primary antagonist in the Fantastic Beasts franchise with Mads Mikkelsen due to his highly publicized legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard. Watch the trailer for Depp V Heard here.
The period piece has already released in France, where it’s grossed almost six million dollars to date. That’s a solid return, but doesn’t necessarily indicate success in the States.
For example, the film has just 49% from critics on review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, and its cast will be largely unknown to North American audiences, including the likes of Pascal Greggory, Pierre Richard, Benjamin Lavernhe, India Hair, and Pauline Pollmann.
The movie is expected to release in the U.S. on May 2. Watch the Jeanne du Barry trailer below.
