John Singleton's daughter Justice pays tribute to her 'hero' dad: He was 'pure love'
As John Singleton’s family mourns his untimely loss at just 51 years old, one of his daughters posted a touching remembrance of him on social media.
The eldest of the Boyz N the Hood director’s seven children, Justice Singleton, talked about being her dad being her “hero” — as well as her lookalike. She called him “pure love,” her “best friend,” the Homer to her Bart, her “film buddy,” her “dreamer and “life companion.” She also vowed to carry on his legacy — and “provide what he can no longer.”
“I think nothing just pure love when I think about my daddy,” the post from Justice — born one year before Singleton’s Poetic Justice, starring Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur, came out — began. “I knew he had imperfections but he was the man I desired to have faith in forever... This man is my hero.”
She said their bond ran deep, sharing, “We are made fun of each other, we comforted each other, we sloppy kissed, we choked each, i was his Bart Simpson. I called Him Homer and when we tickled each other I knew his body was mine. I know I am one of our 7” — also including Maasai, Hadar, Cleopatra, Selenesol, Isis and Seven (from multiple relationships) — “but I still feel like 1. One woman who doesn’t have her best friend, her half, her Film buddy, her dreamer, sailor, and overall life companion.”
And their resemblance was uncanny, she wrote. “He asked who do I look like and I’d say Beyoncé but I knew I looked like him… I have his chin his eyes his skin his heart sometimes his mind.... I’ll always be Justice, his little face.”
She wrote that she plans to keep his legacy going — and “provide what he can no longer. I am his vessel and he is my captain. I’ll share as much of his hopes and dreams. I’ll treat those the way he did, with fist bumps and laughter. I sincerely wish he had more time but what he did here— is everlasting and within me.”
Singleton died on Monday after being removed from life support after a major stroke — an “agonizing decision,” his family said in a statement. Among those to react to his death were Jackson, Singleton’s ex-girlfriend Tyra Banks and close friends including Tyrese, who said he recently asked Singleton to be his new daughter’s godfather.
The family said that plans for memorial services will be announced at a later date.
