John Oliver roasts the misleading nature of crisis pregnancy centers
On Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Oliver demonstrated how easy it is to open a crisis pregnancy center, and to legally present yourself as a medical facility and lie to women considering abortion. As in Season 2, when Oliver established the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption, SNL alum Rachel Dratch appeared as Oliver’s “wife,” Wanda Jo Oliver, to present the mobile crisis pregnancy center Vanned Parenthood. Dratch mocked the misinformation some centers give to women with over-the-top lies of her own.
One such falsehood: “I tell women if they get an abortion it’ll make a ghost baby that’ll haunt their hoo ha forever.” Another was, “Getting an abortion turns your breast milk into Kombucha.” And finally, “After an abortion, your vagina seals shut like an Egyptian tomb.”
In real life, Oliver filed the paperwork in New York to set up a crisis pregnancy center under a nonprofit he created, Our Lady of Choosing Choice. The process has advantages. “The best part is, just like our church, we are tax-exempt and could be eligible for government funding,” Oliver said. “Praise discretionary budgets!” It remains to be seen whether or not Oliver will put Vanned Pregnancy into action.
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
