John Oliver blasts cops threatening to quit over vaccine mandates: 'F***ing let them!'
Sunday's Last Week Tonight With John Oliver examined police officers who are refusing to follow COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Throughout the country, law enforcement officers have threatened to quit or retire as the result of the mandates. Oliver found it ironic that those whose job it is to enforce the rules are so brazenly defying the rules.
“The constant refrain we hear from cops every time they kill an unarmed Black person is, ‘They should have complied with commands,’ because as long as you comply, things will supposedly go well,” Oliver said. “But that only seems to work one way. When officers are asked to follow simple rules or face consequences, a not insignificant amount of them flip their s***.”
Hundreds of police officers have died from COVID-19. In fact, five times more officers have died from the virus than guns since the pandemic began. Despite this fact, some police unions are urging their members to defy vaccine mandates.
The mandates differ from state to state and city to city, but even the most conservative mandates are being met with opposition. In Chicago, officers have been asked to simply document their vaccine status. So far, at least 21 officers have been placed on unpaid leave for refusing to comply. And Oliver didn’t have much compassion for them or any other officer refusing to follow their orders.
“If an officer wants to quit over this, f***ing let them,” Oliver said. “Let the individuals who clearly don't care about public safety stop being in charge of public safety. It’s really that simple.”
Last Week Tonight With John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
