John C. McGinley Joins HBO’s Steve Carell Comedy Series In ‘Scrubs’ Reunion With Creators Bill Lawrence & Matt Tarses
EXCLUSIVE: Scrubs alum John C. McGinley is reuniting with the medical comedy’s creator/executive producer Bill Lawrence and writer/co-executive producer Matt Tarses on their new comedy series for HBO, headlined and executive produced by Steve Carell.
McGinley is joining Carell, Charly Clive, Danielle Deadwyler and Phil Dunster in the cast of the untitled single-camera comedy series, which is set on a college campus and centers on an author’s (Carell) complicated relationship with his daughter (Clive).

McGinley will play Walter Mann, the President of the University.
The first of 10 half-hour episodes was written by Lawrence and Tarses. Lawrence, Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer of Doozer Productions executive produce alongside Tarses and Carell. The series is produced by Doozer in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence’s Doozer banner and Tarses are under overall deals.
This marks McGinley’s third collaboration with Lawrence. In addition to his signature role as Dr. Perry Cox on Scrubs, McGinley also was a series regular on the TBS comedy series Ground Floor, which Lawrence co-created and executive produced. As Deadline reported in December, the long-rumored Scrubs reboot is moving along at ABC with Lawrence set to executive produce and the main cast, including McGinley, in talks to reprise their roles.
Coincidentally, Dr. Cox, who was an attending physician before becoming the chief of medicine at Sacred Heart, started working as an University professor at the end of Scrubs, which is his new character’s background on the HBO series.
McGinley, who is returning to acting after a break, is repped by UTA and attorney Gregg Gellman at Yorn Levine Barnes.
