Joe Biden on His Net Worth: 'I Was the Poorest Man in the United States Congress'
Good news for people who Google things like " Joe Biden net worth," et al. We have the answers. Well, kind of.
In an interview with Speedy Morman for Complex's 360, the current POTUS and former VP in the Obama administration was faced with a question previously answered by previous guests on the show, ranging from GloRilla to Will Smith . Namely, are readily available purported estimates of his net worth accurate?
In Biden’s case, the figure roundly asserted is around $10 million, which Biden suggested wasn’t correct while also looking back on his time as “the poorest man” in Congress.
“I don’t think so,” Biden told Speedy. “But they’re talking about the possibility. For 36 years, I was the poorest man in the United States Congress. 36 years . Poorest man of all 535 members of Congress. Poorest. And I didn’t feel poor. What I had was my salary, a decent salary.”
Asked to elaborate on the specifics of said salary, Biden obliged.
“I think it was, I started off at $42,000 and ended up at a hundred and something,” he said before looking back on the struggles of his own life, including the challenges of taking care of his family after the tragic deaths of his then-wife and daughter in 1972.
“It’s tough for people,” Biden said, speaking more generally. “That’s why, you know, all the programs that I’ve initiated have saved the government money.”
This approach, Biden added, leads to a boost in the economy at large.
“We’re looking at this backwards,” Biden, who has since stepped aside in the 2024 election with his VP, Kamala Harris , now the Democratic nominee, told Speedy in their 360 chat.
