“The Jinx” Filmmaker Says 'We Screamed' When Robert Durst Said He 'Killed Them All': Report

The infamous hot mic was not discovered until two years after it was recorded

The filmmakers behind The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst described their reaction to the moment they discovered Durst’s apparent hot mic confession to the murders of his wife, Kathie, and friend Susan Berman.

“When he said, ‘Killed them all of course,’ I mean, again we screamed,” editor Shelby Siegel said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Like it was, it was incredible. It felt like it was impossible that that’s what he was saying.”

Durst’s infamous confession came at the very end of 2015 docuseries, The Jinx. After completing an interview with series director Andrew Jarecki, Durst went to the bathroom and was seemingly unaware his microphone was still recording. Inside the bathroom, Durst can be heard rambling and concludes with a stunning statement: "What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”

The series, and its shocking conclusion, made significant waves and the series is set for a second season, premiering Sunday, April 21 on HBO.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that the team that made The Jinx didn’t discover the audio until two years after recording the interview.

It was Siegel who first heard the audio, according to the report, and she shared it with executive producer Zac Stuart-Pontier.

“It was amazing, ‘you gotta hear this, you gotta hear this, you gotta hear this, there it is, you’re caught,’” said Stuart-Pontier, according to THR. “And I’m like, ‘Wow,’ like I couldn’t believe it, it was so cool in a way, ’cause it had sort of been there the whole time.”

The night before the finale of The Jinx premiered, Durst was arrested and charged with the 2000 murder of Berman. The real estate scion first made headlines in the 1980s when his wife disappeared. Her body has never been found.

In 2003, Durst went on trial for the murder of neighbor Morris Black, but was found not guilty after successfully convincing a jury he had acted in self-defense.

Durst was ultimately convicted of Berman’s murder in 2021, and he was sentenced to life in prison. He was then charged by New York authorities with Kathie’s presumed murder.

Durst died in a California prison in 2022 at age 78.
