President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted Kenya’s President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto on Thursday for a White House State Dinner in Washington, D.C. The first couple posed for a series of photos with their distinguished guests before entering the White House and joining a bevy of celebrities and political figures, including former President Barack Obama, Sean Penn, Wilmer Valderrama, Melinda Gates and more.

First Lady Jill Biden
The first couple welcomed First Lady of Kenya Rachel Ruto and Kenya’s President William Ruto on the steps of the White House. For the occasion, Jill Biden fashioned a glimmering sapphire column gown by Sergio Hudson, which featured hand-embroidered elements and embellishments such as sequins, crystals and bugle beads.
Vice President Kamala Harris
Harris embraced a dramatic cape look in a bespoke deep green floor-length column dress with a train and a plunging back cape jacket, decorated with a gold flower brooch by Chloé. The look was designed by Chloé’s creative director Chemena Kamali.
Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton
Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wore a caftan with ornate detailing for the White House State Dinner for Kenya. Clinton previously fashioned a similar silhouette for April’s State Dinner for Japan at the White House.
Natalie Biden
Natalie Biden, the granddaughter of the president and first lady, wore this sleek and refined white, long-sleeve dress with intricate beaded detailing on the neckline during the White House State Dinner for Kenya.
Huma Abedin
Huma Abedin, a former campaign staffer for Hillary Clinton, choose a simple look with this black, sleeveless column dress with draped fabric detailing at the neckline.
Sean Penn
Sean Penn wore a classic black suit with a white button-down shirt and black tie. He was joined by Ann Lee, the cofounder and chief executive office of Penn’s Community Organized Relief Effort charity.

The White House State Dinner for Kenya comes following the first couple’s White House State Dinner for Japan in April. The State Dinner for Kenya featured decor themed around the beginning of summer, with several floral arrangements and vibrant colors decorating the White House. Menu items curated by executive chef Cris Comerford included lobster, smoked short ribs and a homemade white chocolate basket. Musician Brad Paisley performed during the evening’s proceedings.
