Jesus Rolls a strike in John Turturro's first Big Lebowski spin-off teaser
He is risen.
Iconic Big Lebowski character Jesus Quintana returns to the big screen later this year, and the first trailer for his upcoming spin-off The Jesus Rolls has a buzzy new trailer to whet your appetite.
While there’s no sign of the Dude, Jeff Bridges, the brief clip sees Jesus (John Turturro, who also directed the film) enjoying his favorite activity as he licks a bowling ball before sending it flying down a lane — and, apparently, into space, in a stylistic move that recalls the first film’s trippy aesthetic — to land a strike.
Also starring Bobby Cannavale, Susan Sarandon, Jon Hamm, Audrey Tautou, and Christopher Walken, The Jesus Rolls follows the titular character just as he’s released from prison, upon which he pairs with fellow misfits Petey (Cannavale) and Marie (Tautou) to embark on a freewheeling joyride of petty crime and romantic entanglements.
The teaser debuts 22 years after The Big Lebowski first hit theaters in 1998, becoming a cult classic and one of Joel and Ethan Coen‘s most popular films to date.
“It feels like a good time to release a transgressive film about the stupidity of men who try and fail and try better to understand and penetrate the mystery of women,” Turturro previously said of making the film. “I look forward to working with Screen Media and bring our work and the character of the Jesus to American audiences.”
A release date for The Jesus Rolls has yet to be announced. Watch the first teaser above.
