Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons and Celia Keenan-Bolger Make a Move in Broadway's “Mother Play” (Exclusive)

PEOPLE has a first look at the trip of award-winning actors in Paula Vogel's new play

A trio of acclaimed, awarded actors are leading Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel's newest play, and PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at them in action!

Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons and Celia Keenan-Bolger are starring in Broadway's Mother Play — A Play in Five Evictions, which the Second Stage Theater production describes as "a bitingly funny and unflinchingly honest new play about the hold our family has over us and the surprises we find when we unpack the past."

Beginning previews Tuesday, April 2, the limited engagement play — directed by Tina Landau — will officially open on Thursday, April 25 at the Hayes Theater in New York City.

The actors get into character in a preview image PEOPLE can exclusively debut. Snapped in the back of a moving truck, Keenan-Bolger, 46, and Parsons, 50, strike a pose while standing behind a sitting, smoldering Lange, 74.

Set in 1962 just outside Washington, D.C., the play follows matriarch Phyllis (Lange) as she supervises her teenage children, Carl (Parsons) and Martha (Keenan-Bolger) amid their move into a new apartment.

"Phyllis has strong ideas about what her children need to do and be to succeed, and woe be the child who finds their own path," the official description reads. "Bolstered by gin and cigarettes, the family endures — or survives — the changing world around them. Blending flares of imaginative theatricality, surreal farce, and deep tenderness, this beautiful rollercoaster ride reveals timeless truths of love, family, and forgiveness."

Lange, Parsons and Keenan-Bolger are three of the most-decorated actors to tread the boards this season.

Throughout her nearly five decade career, Lange has been acclaimed as one of the greatest of her generation. She's won two Academy Awards, three Emmys, five Golden Globes, a SAG Award and a Tony award — the latter for her performance in 2016 Long Day's Journey Into Night, her last Broadway credit. On film and television, she's had memorable parts in Blue Sky, Frances, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Country, Cape Fear, Tootsie, Music Box, and Sweet Dreams, as well as American Horror Story, Grey Gardens, Feud: Bette and Joan and The Politician.

Parsons is best known for playing Sheldon Cooper in the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory from 2007 to 2019, a project that earned him four Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. He also won a SAG Award for being a part of the Hidden Figures cast. Parsons has starred on Broadway in An Actor of God, Harvey, The Normal Heart and The Boys in the Band — the latter two which won Tonys for best revival of a play. He's go on to reprise his roles in both film adaptations.

Keenan-Bolger earned a Tony Award for playing Scout in the 2018 play To Kill a Mockingbird.

She's been a standout on Broadway over the years, in breakthrough performances in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Glass Menagerie, The Cherry Orchard, Peter and The Starcatcher and Les Misérables. She's currently one of the SAG Award-nominated stars of The Gilded Age, and has been seen on screen in Bull, Louie, The Good Wife, Nurse Jackie and Elementary (among others).

Meanwhile, both Vogel and Landau bring prestige of their own to Mother Play.

Vogel, 72, won the Pulitzer for How I Learned to Drive. The playwright has also penned a number of number of other acclaimed plays, including The Long Christmas Ride Home, The Mineola Twins, The Baltimore Waltz, Hot’n’Throbbing, Desdemona, And Baby Makes Seven, The Oldest Profession and A Civil War Christmas, as well as Indecent, which received a Tony Award nomination for best play.

Landau, 61, has had her word recognized by the Tony Awards, Drama Desks, Drama League, Outer Critics, Lucille Lortel, and Obies. The writer and director's Broadway credits include The SpongeBob Musical , Tracy Letts’ Superior Donuts and the revival of Bells Are Ringing.
