Jeff Daniels Reprises ‘Newsroom’ Character to Talk Trump vs. Clinton
No one hit politics harder than Will McAvoy, the character from the HBO show The Newsroom, famously portrayed by Jeff Daniels. The actor was a guest on Bloomberg TV’s With All Due Respect and reprised an inspirational moment from the show. On The Newsroom, McAvoy is prompted to give a candid response while on a panel for the first time in his career. And Daniels does the same in regards to a question about Donald Trump’s being the best-case-scenario candidate for Hillary Clinton. “Because he’s not the best-case scenario. That’s my answer,” says Daniels, with all the fire of a real news anchor.
Daniels keeps the momentum going throughout the parody. “I mean Donald Trump is a fact-bending loose cannon who alienates mainstream voters with everything he says,” says Daniels, “but he gets constant media attention for free.” Daniels also laughs at anyone who thinks the United States can’t elect a female president, and actually uses real statistics in his argument. It really blurred the line between political rant and HBO parody.
