Jean Smart reveals she's in recovery from heart procedure: 'Please listen to your body'

For Jean Smart, taking care of your health is a matter of the heart.

The “Hacks” star took to Instagram Thursday to reveal that she’s in recovery from a recent cardiac procedure.

“February is American Heart Month — a time when the nation spotlights heart health, so it feels important to share with all of you that I’m recovering from a recent, successful heart procedure,” Smart wrote. “I am fortunate to have excellent professional care and support from family and friends while I continue to recuperate.”

Smart encouraged her followers to be proactive about their own health. “Please listen to your body and talk to your doctor,” she added. “I’m very glad I did.”

Smart didn’t disclose any details about the procedure or the condition that prompted it in her post.

USA TODAY has reached out to Smart’s representatives for comment.

“Hacks,” the Emmy-winning dramedy Smart stars on alongside Hannah Einbinder and Carl Clemons-Hopkins, is currently in production for its third season. But production for some departments on the show has been paused in observance of Smart’s recovery, a source familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly told USA TODAY.

“We are so happy that our beloved Jean Smart’s heart procedure was successful and she’s on the mend,” HBO Max and Universal Television said in a statement. “HBO Max and UTV send their well wishes.”

This isn’t the first time Smart has opened up about her health. The actress previously told the New Yorker about how her journey with diabetes as a teen influenced the trajectory of her acting career.

“My mother insisted that I stay in Seattle for college. I had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was 13, and she still hadn’t gotten over that by the time I was getting ready to graduate high school. She was afraid, I think, for me to go out of state to school,” said Smart, who would go onto enroll in the “phenomenal theatre program” at the University of Washington. “So, I have my mother and my diabetes to thank.”
