Janet Jackson reveals she’s related to Samuel L. Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Tracy Chapman
Does that make them all nasty?
We already knew that Janet Jackson was part of a staggering musical dynasty that includes Michael Jackson and the rest of the Jackson 5 — but her family’s entertainment chops go even further than that.
In an interview with Scott Mills on BBC 2’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, the “Rhythm Nation” singer casually revealed that her extended family includes several other massive stars. Just before Mills played Stevie Wonder’s “Do I Do,” Jackson said, “He’s our cousin. Not a lot of people know that. He’s our cousin on my mother’s side.”
The revelations didn’t stop there. “So is Tracy Chapman,” she said. “So is Samuel Jackson.”
When Mills asked for clarification, she reiterated that all three of them are her cousins. Of Samuel L. Jackson, she noted, “He would be a cousin too, I mean he’s not my brother.”
Reps for Janet Jackson, Wonder, Chapman, and Samuel L. Jackson did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly’s request for comment.

It’s not immediately clear how closely related all these stars are, as online records don’t immediately show the connections between the musical Jacksons, Wonder, Chapman, and Samuel L. Jackson — they could be second or third cousins, or be removed by generations. TMZ claims that Wonder is the Jacksons' third cousin, once removed, though the outlet doesn't cite a source.
What we do know is that Janet Jackson's mother Katherine Scruse Jackson hailed from Alabama, while Wonder grew up in Michigan, Chapman is from Ohio, and Samuel L. Jackson was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Tennessee. (Jackson also previously shut down speculation that he was related to Michael Jackson.)
Additionally, these entertainers have crossed paths professionally several times over their storied careers. Wonder wrote “Let’s Get Serious” for Jermaine Jackson, and performed two duets with Michael Jackson: “Just Good Friends” from Bad and “Get It” on Wonder’s Characters. Wonder also performed at the King of Pop’s memorial service in 2009.

Meanwhile, Chapman filled in for Wonder at Nelson Mandela’s 70th Birthday Tribute celebration at London’s Wembley Stadium in 1988 after the “Sir Duke” singer experienced technical difficulties. Wonder also contributed music to Spike Lee’s 1991 film Jungle Fever, one of Samuel L. Jackson’s most prominent breakout roles. Sam Jackson later appeared in two episodes of Lifetime’s 2022 documentary series Janet Jackson.
Later in the BBC2 interview, Janet Jackson discussed her relationship with Kylie Minogue. “We’ve always met up here and there throughout the years and said hello,” she said. “I was in Vegas and I heard she was there and I couldn’t wait. I was like, ‘Oh please, before we start up, I gotta see her.’ Her show was wonderful, absolutely wonderful.”
