Jackpot 2: Director Teases Role for Jason Statham in Potential Sequel
Following the release of Jackpot, viewers are wondering if Jackpot 2 is in the works. Helmed by Paul Feig, the action comedy film features John Cena, Awkwafina, and Simu Liu. It has garnered a mixed reaction from the critics, while the audience response remains to be evaluated. However, there are already speculations about a sequel to Jackpot, with the director even teasing an appearance by Jason Statham.
So, here’s everything to know about the possibility of Jackpot 2 and what Paul Feig shared about the sequel.
Paul Feig teases Jackpot 2 prospects
Paul Feig, known for directing films such as Bridesmaids (2011) and Ghostbusters (2016), teased in a recent interview that action star Jason Statham might appear in the prospective Jackpot 2. Albeit, the project that hasn’t been officially greenlit yet.
At the red-carpet event for Jackpot, Feig was asked by The Direct whether he would survive if the people of Los Angeles came for him after he won the lottery in the film. In response, he named the people that he would call for assistance. “I’m calling John Cena or Simu Liu or Jason Statham and saying, ‘Help,'” joked Feig. When the outlet pointed out that Statham wasn’t part of the cast of Jackpot, he added, “There’s always a sequel.”
The question was inspired by the first film’s plot, which takes place in 2030. By then, the world witnesses another Great Depression, which prompts the creation of the California Grand Lottery. Following the declaration of a winner, the holders of the losing tickets have until sundown to kill the person and legally claim the money. The only rule is that they have to do it without any firearms.
Jackpot revolves around Katie Kim (Awkwafina), a struggling actor, who inadvertently becomes the jackpot winner. As she finds herself in the crosshairs of almost everyone in the city, an amateur lottery protection agent named Noel (Cena) comes to her rescue.
As of August 2024, it is uncertain whether Jackpot will receive a sequel. Yet, the basic premise of Jackpot definitely has enough scope for a sequel featuring Jason Statham, as teased by Paul Feig.
