The It List: Gwyneth Paltrow welcomes you to 'The Goop Lab,' Patrick Stewart returns as Picard in new 'Star Trek' series, Netflix & Chill'd ice cream debuts and the best in pop culture the week of Jan. 20, 2020
The It List is Yahoo’s weekly look at the best in pop culture, including movies, music, TV, streaming, games, books, podcasts and more. Here are our picks for Jan. 20-26, including the best deals we could find for each. (Yahoo Entertainment may receive a share from purchases made via links on this page.)
WATCH IT: Gwyneth Paltrow brings Goop to Netflix
It's been over two weeks since The Goop Lab trailer divided the internet and now it's time to see if the show is as "dangerous" as some suggest. The six-episode docuseries follows Paltrow and her team of employees as they explore wellness issues, fads and ideas that "may seem out there or too scary." Topics range from energy healing to psychedelics, but it wouldn't be Goop without some controversy. Paltrow's company has been called out before for promoting unscientific or potentially harmful health trends and the show is already facing similar criticism — despite the fact it hasn't been released yet. Paltrow brushed off naysayers, but now it's time to decide for yourself. How dangerous can cold therapy or an exorcism really be? — Taryn Ryder
The Goop Lab premieres Friday, Jan. 24 on Netflix.
WATCH IT: Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding mount a serious charm offensive in Last Christmas
The yuletide rom-com, Last Christmas, may not have been a box office gift, but the pairing of Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding brings plenty of great cheer. The Game of Thrones star plays Kate, a struggling actress/Christmas store elf who has a meet cute moment with Golding’s handsome Tom that appears to spark a life-changing romance — but you know what they say about appearances being deceiving. We’ll let you discover Last Christmas’s plot twist for yourself when the film arrives on digital services on Jan. 21, with a Blu-ray and DVD release to follow on Feb. 4. In the meantime, we’re premiering an extended ending that pays off a crucial piece of advice that Tom provides Kate during the movie. (Watch the clip above.) While escorting her on an impromptu tour of London, Tom encourages Kate to “Look up” and see a world beyond her own problems. In this “4 months later” epilogue, she repays the favor by telling a group of tourists the same thing. Friendly reminder that advice is one of the most valuable Christmas presents you can give... or receive. — Ethan Alter
Last Christmas premieres on Digital on Jan. 21 and on Blu-ray and DVD on Feb. 4.
WATCH IT: Guy Ritchie’s back in action with The Gentlemen
After helming big-budget, little-loved flicks like Aladdin and King Arthur, director Guy Ritchie is back in his London gangster element. Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Michelle Dockery, Henry Golding, Charlie Hunnam Jeremy Strong and Matthew McConaughey — playing a weed empire-running Yank — headline this gritty caper in the vein of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Think: Cockney accents, dapper suits, cheeky banter and a spot of violence, love. — Erin Donnelly
The Gentlemen hits theaters Friday, Jan. 24; visit Fandango for showtime and ticket information.
WATCH IT: Patrick Stewart beams back aboard the Star Trek franchise with Star Trek: Picard
Patrick Stewart returning to Star Trek? CBS All Access has made it so. Twenty-six years after the last episode of The Next Generation, and 18 years after the last TNG movie, Jean-Luc Picard is back for a new adventure… one that doesn’t appear to involve the U.S.S. Enterprise. Instead, the 10-episode Star Trek: Picard series finds the retired admiral pursuing an independent investigation — both on Earth and in space — into a conspiracy that potentially reaches the upper echelons of Starfleet. “The story is great,” Stewart told Yahoo Entertainment last year. “I was struck by how clever these [writers] were, who could tell a narrative very well and were very attuned to what an actor needed to hear. What we have coming up is exciting…it excites me as an actor!” Here’s what excites us: In addition to Stewart, Picard will also feature cameos from several Trek all-stars, including Stewart’s former TNG co-stars Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis as well as Voyager’s Jeri Ryan. We’re ready to boldly go wherever the series will take us. — E.A.
Star Trek: Picard premieres Thursday, Jan. 23 on CBS All Access.
FOLLOW IT: The Sundance Film Festival opens Thursday
The Robert Redford-founded 2020 Sundance Film Festival opens Thursday, Jan. 23 in Park City, Utah — and let's face it, the vast, vast majority of us movie buffs will not be in attendance. But Sundance is still crucial to follow along from afar: Every new installment gives us an annual blueprint on what buzzed-about independent films are primed to break out over the course of that year like 2019’s The Farewell, Honey Boy and The Last Black Man in San Francisco; though yes, big splashes at Sundance like Late Night do occasionally underperform. Hot titles to keep an eye on this year include the Will Ferrell-Julia Louis-Dreyfus Force Majeure remake Downhill, Dee Rees's Mudbound follow-up The Last Thing He Wanted and the Carey Mulligan-starring #MeToo revenge thriller Promising Young Woman. — Kevin Polowy

WATCH IT: Zombieland: Double Tap rules on Blu-ray
As director Ruben Fleischer told us, he never saw the first Zombieland movie as a traditional zombie thriller — it's more of a family road trip comedy a la Vacation that just so happens to be littered with the walking dead. That approach is even more evident in the sequel that hit theaters last fall and lands on home entertainment this week: There's relationship trouble brewing in (the opposite of) paradise for zombie apocalypse survivors Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), and they’re gonna have to once again navigate through a bloody hellscape to solve it. This very worthy successor to the 2009 hit arrives on Blu-ray and other formats with nine alternate scenes, a blooper reel and more. — K.P.

BUY IT: Fork yeah! Funko releases a line of Good Place Pops to commemorate the series finale
NBC’s heavenly comedy, The Good Place, is scheduled to (dearly) depart the airwaves on Jan. 30, but the series will live on in fans’ hearts, and also on their desks and shelves courtesy of Funko’s new line of vinyl collectibles. The show’s six core cast members have been faithfully recreated in Pop form, from Janet and her cactus, to Eleanor and her fro-yo to Jason and his Blake Bortles jersey. We do have some forking bad news to share — as of now, there’s no Bad Janet figure. Fortunately, Funko did give us some Bad Boys to make up for that oversight: Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Miami cops get the Pop treatment just in time with last weekend’s box office champ, Bad Boys for Life. — E.A.
The Good Place and Bad Boys Funko Pops are available for pre-order on Amazon.
WATCH IT: Valentine’s Day comes early with a new edition of rom com Sliding Doors
In an alternate reality, audiences have never seen this 1999 romantic comedy, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, as a London woman living two lives, one in which she catches the train and finds out that her freeloading boyfriend is cheating on her, and another in which she misses it and continues not knowing. Thankfully, we’re living in this world, where many of us have had the pleasure of watching the delightful movie that features charming actor John Hannah as the love interest, Zara Turner as the funny friend and, notably, Paltrow’s cool pixie haircut, which she, of course, acquires after a breakup. The new edition includes a feature-length documentary about the making of the movie and audio commentary from writer/director Peter Howitt. It’s the perfect excuse to watch the movie in any reality. — Raechal Shewfelt
Sliding Doors Collector’s Edition is available on Blu-Ray on Tuesday, Jan. 21 from Shout! Factory.
HEAR IT: Pet Shop Boys hit the spot with Hotspot
The iconic, acerbic British duo respectively team with Olly Alexander of Years & Years and Suede guitarist Bernard Butler for the uptempo club banger “Dreamland” and languid space-ballad “Burning the Heather” — proving that, 14 albums and nearly 40 years into their career, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe haven’t lost their knack for crafting perfect synthpop. — Lyndsey Parker

WATCH IT: A double bill of Color Out of Space and VHYes will satisfy your cult movie cravings
Attention Nic Cage fans! The actor’s latest kooky horror picture, Color Out of Space, features lots of old-school creature effects and plenty of good ol’ fashioned Cage Rage. Adapted from an H.P. Lovecraft story by co-writer/director, Richard Stanley, the film stars Cage as the patriarch of the Gardner family, whose rustic farmhouse is invaded by a glowing meteorite that causes the entire clan to start behaving oddly. How oddly? Well, Nathan (Cage) starts scarfing down tomatoes and yelling about alpacas; his wife Theresa (Joely Richardson) becomes a mutated version of her former self; and their kids Lavinia and Benny (Madeleine Arthur and Brendan Meyer) experience eerie encounters of the third kind. All in all, it’s a bloody good time for midnight movie cultists.
And if you’re looking to stay up a little later, pair Color Out of Space with VHYes, a 72-minute oddity that resembles the demented offspring of Amazon Women on the Moon and Too Many Cooks. Directed by Jack Henry Robbins and shot almost entirely on a VHS camcorder, the movie alternates the story of a young kid witnessing the dissolution of his parents’ marriage with increasingly bizarre (and hilarious) clips from late-night TV channels featuring cameos from folks like Thomas Lennon, Tim Robbins and Charlyne Yi. If you miss the era of tape tracking and public access television, say yes to VHYes. — E.A.
Color Out of Space and VHYes are playing in limited release; visit Fandango for showtime and ticket information.
