For those who have watched the heartwarming yet nail-biting two seasons of Wolf Like Me, then you know the show is not afraid to take risks. From terrifying wolf scenes to surprising new characters (like the second season’s guest star Edgar Ramirez), it’s a show that leaves fans constantly guessing what comes next.
And, of course, the show wouldn’t be the same without its stars, Isla Fisher and Josh Gad, who make it all come alive with their perfect blend of humor and heart. “Josh and I rather get on really well,” Fisher tells SheKnows of their relationship. “And we always have like a shorthand on set.”
For those unfamiliar, Wolf Like Me tells the unconventional love story of Mary (Fisher) and Gary (Gad) who fall in love despite Mary’s deepest secret: she transforms into a wolf every full moon.
“[Gad’s] a perfect scene partner for me because he takes it seriously when he’s working but in between takes he’s up for having fun,” she adds, noting that their time offscreen makes the whole process “a lot easier.” “I don’t have to worry about walking on eggshells around another performer whose process can be different and the same with Arielle who plays [Gary’s daughter] Emma,” she adds. “All three of us just play word games and make jokes.”
Most of all, Fisher and Gad connected because of one major similarity in their lives: having kids. As a reminder, Fisher has three kids Olive, 15, Elula, 12, and Montgomery, 8, with partner Sacha Baron Cohen while Gad shares two daughters, Ava and Isabella, with his wife Ida Darvish.
“We’ve both got kids and so there’s a lot of discussions about how those scenes should be played out,” Fishers says of their characters, who are expecting their first child together in season 2. “And I have a relationship with a step-parent and so does Josh, so we talk a lot about how to give Emma and Mary those moments without stepping on the fact that she’s obviously lost her own mother.”
“Having kids is so transformative in every sense, physically, emotionally, psychologically, and becoming a mother or a father just fills up every space in your life,” Fishers reflects, adding it’s “such a gigantic shift.”
Before Fisher’s character Mary becomes a mom, however, she dreads finding out if her child will be human or wolf, something Fisher loved diving into as an actress. “I really enjoyed cracking that open with these characters in this world and just how much bigger the world became this season,” she says, adding that the “ticking clock element of the cops chasing” and the impending birth made it all the more exciting.
As for season 3, the jury is still out on whether they’ll get a third season on Peacock. Fisher, for her part, is hoping it comes to life.
“I really hope we get to make season three. It’s such an exciting time to be on Peacock, they really let us push the boundaries of the show and we get to kind of create a series that we want,” Fisher says. “I feel like my dream is to see the wolf pup and to see it turn into a baby and to watch their romance and their family deepen.”
“My fingers and toes are crossed. It’s one of those jobs that is so rare where all the ingredients are great, the producers are great, the distributors are amazing, the exes are great, the location is perfect and everyone involved is just, honestly just a super nice person,” she says, adding that it would “be a shame” not to continue after season two’s major cliffhanger. As fans of the show, we couldn’t agree more!
