Hunter Schafer began her career in entertainment as a model, but soon her notable talent had her starring across from Zendaya in Euphoria and tapped for a role in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the highly anticipated Hunger Games prequel. In 2024, she had roles in Kinds of Kindness and stars in the new mystery horror film Cuckoo.
Schafer does share some details of her private life—especially when dating co-stars—but she has admitted that romance has some challenges with her career and all the travel involved.
She told Harper’s Bazaar Australia, “I haven’t spent more than three or four years in the same city, except for Raleigh when I was growing up. But since then it’s been these little pockets of special, intense relationships. Parents and siblings, my first friends in New York, my first love.”
She has shared some details about those special, intense relationships. In a candid interview with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Schafer said her first relationship was with a trans woman, which was a wonderful introduction to love for her as a trans woman herself.
“It was my entrance into sex, romance, all of that stuff. All of those were firsts in that relationship, and it was with another trans woman—thank god,” she shared. “She kind of showed me the ropes because dating as a trans person—it’s complicated... To know in my first relationship and in my first really being in this mutual love thing, first time having sex, that I got to do it with somebody who completely understands my gender—I’m so thankful for it.”
While she didn’t say who, she has shared some names over the years when it comes to her love life. Here’s Hunter Schafer’s complete (known) dating history so far.
Rosalía
In an interview with GQ for its Creativity Issue in April 2023, Schafer shared that she and singer Rosalía were “once romantically involved,” revealing they dated for five months in 2019. The news was fairly shocking for fans because while people had wondered, it was never confirmed.
“It’s been so much speculation for so long,” the actress said, explaining she’d gotten Rosalía’s permission to share. “Part of us just wants to get it over with, and then another part is like,‘It’s none of anybody’s fucking business!’ It’s something I’m happy to share. And I think she feels that way too.”
She continued, “I have really beautiful friendships with people that I was once romantically involved with...She’s family no matter what.”
Massima Desire
In 2020, Schafer was rumored to be dating model Massima Desire. Though they never confirmed it, People reported they had been together at some point. But they could have also just been friends. They were often paired together in shoots on set and seemed to have incredible chemistry.
Dominic Fike
Schafer’s most well-known relationship was with her Euphoria co-star Dominic Fike. The romance rumors first started circulating in January 2022 when gossip Instagram account DeuxMoi said they’d been spotted holding hands. Just a month later, Fike celebrated Schafer’s birthday by sharing a photo of them kissing on his Instagram Stories with the caption, “Happy birthday happy birthday.”
They went red carpet official only a month after that at the Vanity Fair Oscar after-party. In May 2022, Fike told GQ in an interview that on the set of Euphoria, they had an almost instant connection.
“In those moments, your relationship is accelerated because you’re so vulnerable with someone, immediately,” he said. “Which usually takes a long time. Some people fall in love, like, fucking months after they meet or years after. We developed an attraction—it sped it up so fast. We just really got to know each other so quickly.”
In February 2023, Schafer told Elle UK, “I think we are able to be a safety net for one another. I feel like I’ve been learning a lot about the effort it takes to upkeep it. Because it does, you know, especially in our world. But, to me, it’s deeply worth it.”
However, in July 2023, Fike confirmed they had split in an Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe. He said he’s “done being in relationships right now,” due to co-dependency issues.
Just a day later, a profile of Fike released in the Los Angeles Times spoke of the relationship in the past tense.
“When I had a girlfriend, we’d sleep over here,” he said. “I could make music around her, which was crazy. I was looking through songs the other day and found one that I made with her...I was like, ‘Man, that was so cool.’ But the fact of me saying that—of being uncomfortable being alone—that’s a bad thing. So I decided to just be alone for a while.”
In August 2024, Schafer opened up about the end of the relationship from her perspective on an episode of Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast. During their talk, Schafer shared that infidelity on Fike’s side was an issue. She admitted it had “fundamentally changed” her in some ways.
“It’s part of why the relationship ended, is I got cheated on for the first time,” she said. “He’s talked about this, too—in his songs, he writes about it—so it’s fine to be talking about it today, and it’s part of my truth. But that fundamentally changed me as a person. And it was this whole process of realizing that cheating has nothing to do with you at all. It has everything to do with that person and whatever kind of pain they’re in, or whatever they’re dealing with.”
She also shared how Fike was her first monogamous relationship with a man, having dated women and been in polyamorous relationships before. She said her feelings about the breakup were complicated by the fact that she was the first trans woman Fike had been with, which brought up insecurities when he cheated.
“This is a straight guy who is in the music scene, too, and we’re in a public relationship; he’s dating a trans woman. He’s completely straight; he’s only dated cis women before,” Schafer said. “And he’s toting me around, happy to be my boyfriend in front of the world, and people are saying horrible, nasty shit because it’s like, ‘Oh, so he’s gay?’ He didn’t care at all. … I wasn’t anxious, but I was also head over heels in love and happy to be doing it.”
She continued, “As a trans woman with a man who has never dated [a trans woman] before, then it’s [in] my mind. I knew it wasn’t the truth … but my brain, because of the way I’ve been socialized as a trans woman, and it’s been this crux in my life of, like, why life has been so hard sometimes. I’m like ‘Oh my god, is this it?’”
Schafer did not go into many more details about how their relationship ended, saying, “What happened with that was between me and him, and I want to keep it [private], and I want to protect that.”
