Hunger Games Star Reportedly Cast in Watch Dogs Film Adaptation
Film and TV adaptations of video games are very popular right now, with games like The Last of Us and Fallout making very graceful transitions to scripted entertainment in recent years. It doesn’t look like that trend is slowing down anytime soon, and what could be the next big adaptation seems to have landed a pretty big star.
Deadline has reported that New Regency’s adaptation of the video game Watch Dogs has landed its leading man, with Tom Blyth said to be stepping into the role. Blyth is best known for his role in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, where he portrayed a younger version of Donald Sutherland’s Coriolanus Snow.
Blyth will be appearing alongside Australian actress Sophie Wilde, who shot to stardom in the horror film Talk to Me. Neither role has been disclosed, nor has the plot of the film.
Watch Dogs is a somewhat divisive series from Ubisoft, which has three entries each focused on hacking and social justice. The first game, released in 2014, had a somewhat mixed reception from fans and critics, while its sequel, Watch Dogs 2, was received a little bit better, with the story and characters in particular praised by many.
The Watch Dogs film has been in development for over a decade, with it reportedly being in development hell for over 7 years. Ultimately, Mathieu Turi joined the film to direct the project, and Christie LeBlance was brought on to write the original screenplay.
This isn’t the first film to come from an Ubisoft property — 2016 saw the release of Assassin’s Creed, a film starring Michael Fassbender and tying into the franchise as a whole. It was a bit of a flop, to say the least, so this new Watch Dogs film is an opportunity to get things right and set the record straight.
No release date or release window has been set for Watch Dogs.
