Today posted the new clip on Oct. 21, with Fischer sharing how her perspective changed after her diagnosis.
"All of the most important things became so clear so quickly," the actress said. "And also, I’ll say, I find the world to be such a beautiful place in all of its quirkiness."
The actress was officially diagnosed with Stage 1 triple-positive breast cancer in December 2023, beginning a long health battle that included "surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and then targeted therapies...which I'm still doing now." Thankfully, once Fischer completed the final round of chemo, the doctors didn't detect any cancer.
As Fischer got emotional talking about the struggles of everyday life during treatment, Kotb got teary-eyed as well. But she really felt the emotions once Fischer shared a story involving the Today anchor.
"After my surgery, I’m, you know, recovering, I watched the Today show," she recalled. "I got up out of bed and I sat on the bench at the end of my bed with a cup of coffee and my big ole pillow, and I would watch you and Savannah [Guthrie] and Jenna [Bush Hager] and all the fellows. And you kept me company.”
Fischer then declared that, at the time, she thought, "If I ever get the chance to tell this story, I want to talk to you because I know that there’s a lady right now who’s sitting on a bench at the end of her bed with her pillow, and she’s wondering, ‘What’s next for me?'”
Kotb listened dutifully to Fischer's story, wiping away tears at the story involving the Today show.
